Cooking Safety Tips for Plainview?

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

A person is cooking in a kitchen. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Pierce County.

SERVPRO® of Norfolk is a trusted leader in fire damage restoration. Here are some kitchen fire safety tips from Travelers Insurance:

What to Do If a Cooking Fire Flares Up

  • Your safety comes first. If you cannot safely extinguish the fire, leave the scene, call 911 for help, and let the fire department control the fire.
  • If a small fire flares up and you are going to try to extinguish it, call 911 for help first. A fire may grow out of control more quickly than you anticipate.
  • Smother a grease fire – never throw water on a grease fire. The water can be super-heated, change to steam, and cause severe burns. Also, it can cause oil to splash up and spread the fire. If a grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan while wearing an oven mitt. If safe to do so, turn off the heat source. Do not move the pan; keep the lid on until the fire is out and the pan is completely cool.
  • If a fire starts in your oven, keep the door closed and turn off the heat source. Keeping the door closed will help smother the flames. Do not open the door until the flames are completely out.

Smoke Alarm Safety for Stanton?

1/19/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke is rising towards a smoke alarm. We are trusted leaders in contents restoration services in Wayne County.

Stanton residents need to know.

Have you tested your smoke alarms lately? Smoke alarms are an essential part of a home fire escape plan. They provide an early warning so you can get out quickly. SERVPRO® of Norfolk witnesses firsthand the difference properly installed and maintained smoke detectors can make. Here is some information on smoke alarms from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.
  • Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Large homes may need extra smoke alarms
  • Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
  • People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.
  • Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms
  • When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside
  • Replace all smoke alarms in your home every ten years

Basement Flooding in Battle Creek?

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

A wall in a basement shows water on the walls. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Madison County.

The winter months bring lots of opportunities for basements to flood to Battle Creek. SERVPRO® of Norfolk offers these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for protecting your basement from water damage:

  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you’ve never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
  • Make sure water drains away from the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall, potentially through any cracks. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building.
  • Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.
