Cooking Safety Tips for Plainview?

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

A person is cooking in a kitchen. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Pierce County.

SERVPRO® of Norfolk is a trusted leader in fire damage restoration. Here are some kitchen fire safety tips from Travelers Insurance:

What to Do If a Cooking Fire Flares Up

  • Your safety comes first. If you cannot safely extinguish the fire, leave the scene, call 911 for help, and let the fire department control the fire.
  • If a small fire flares up and you are going to try to extinguish it, call 911 for help first. A fire may grow out of control more quickly than you anticipate.
  • Smother a grease fire – never throw water on a grease fire. The water can be super-heated, change to steam, and cause severe burns. Also, it can cause oil to splash up and spread the fire. If a grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan while wearing an oven mitt. If safe to do so, turn off the heat source. Do not move the pan; keep the lid on until the fire is out and the pan is completely cool.
  • If a fire starts in your oven, keep the door closed and turn off the heat source. Keeping the door closed will help smother the flames. Do not open the door until the flames are completely out.

1/19/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke is rising towards a smoke alarm. We are trusted leaders in contents restoration services in Wayne County.

Stanton residents need to know.

Have you tested your smoke alarms lately? Smoke alarms are an essential part of a home fire escape plan. They provide an early warning so you can get out quickly. SERVPRO® of Norfolk witnesses firsthand the difference properly installed and maintained smoke detectors can make. Here is some information on smoke alarms from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.
  • Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Large homes may need extra smoke alarms
  • Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
  • People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.
  • Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms
  • When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside
  • Replace all smoke alarms in your home every ten years

Basement Flooding in Battle Creek?

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

A wall in a basement shows water on the walls. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Madison County.

The winter months bring lots of opportunities for basements to flood to Battle Creek. SERVPRO® of Norfolk offers these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for protecting your basement from water damage:

  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you’ve never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
  • Make sure water drains away from the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall, potentially through any cracks. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building.
  • Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.

A tree is shown blown over from high winds. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Stanton County.

SERVPRO® of Norfolk responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in Wakefield. High winds can cause structural damage to homes and businesses. Here are some helpful tips for mitigating wind damage:

Traditional Homes

  • Keep your home firmly anchored in high winds by having anchor bolts with heavy-gauge, square bolt washers installed to connect your floor to the foundation
  • Reinforce the rest of the frame by connecting wall and floor components with properly installed plywood or oriented strand board and attach roof trusses or rafters to the walls with metal connectors
    • On existing homes, this can be done when replacing siding

Manufactured Homes

  • Manufactured homes are more prone to damage from high winds as a result of non-permanent foundations
  • Inspect all straps and tie-downs regularly for rust, weakness, or wear and have repairs made immediately

Windows

  • Install windows rated for the wind speeds in your region
  • For the best protection in hurricane-prone areas, install impact-resistant permanent shutters that meet applicable building code approved standards

Tornado Warning for Tilden?

9/21/2021 (Permalink)

A “tornado watch” sign is shown. We are trusted leaders in storm damage mitigation in Madison County.

The average number of tornadoes in Nebraska fell from 51 to 21 in 2020. Scientists attribute this to a dryer summer and the jet stream not being in the position to bring the stronger storms up and into the state. When tornadoes and severe weather do occur, SERVPRO® of Norfolk wants Tilden residents to be safe and offer some tornado safety tips from the American Red Cross:

  • Identify a safe place in your home where household members and pets will gather during a tornado. A basement, storm cellar, or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.
  • In a high-rise building, pick a hallway in the center of the building. You may not have enough time to go to the lowest floor.
  • In a mobile home, choose a safe place in a nearby sturdy building. If your mobile home park has a designated shelter, make it your safe place. No mobile home, however it is configured, is safe in a tornado.
  • tornado watch means a tornado is possible
  • tornado warning means a tornado is already occurring or will occur soon. Go to your safe place immediately.

Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips for Stanton?

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

A firefighter is shown holding a fire extinguisher. We respond to fire damage emergencies . . .

Stanton residents need to know.

When used properly, fire extinguishers save lives. SERVPRO® of Norfolk offers these fire extinguisher safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

Use a portable fire extinguisher when the fire is confined to a small area, such as a wastebasket, and is not growing; everyone has exited the building; the fire department has been called or is being called, and the room is not filled with smoke.

  • To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:
  • Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism
  • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
  • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side
  • For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire, but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out

Mold Problem in Norfolk?

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

Mold is shown growing on a wall underneath wallpaper. We mitigate and restore mold damage in Madison County.

I thought I had mold at the bottom of my sink, but it wasn't my sink that had mold it was my floor and walls. As we pulled up some flooring, we could smell a funny smell, in-fact it was a sewage smell. We had a sewer drain back up in our basement and we thought we had it all cleaned, we were wrong! After pulling back some flooring we deiced to start felling our walls and noticed that the walls were damp, so we cut into the wall, and I saw the mold. Yikes!

SERVPRO® of Norfolk mitigates and remediates mold damage in Norfolk and offers this information from our website about mold and how it spreads:

Understanding Mold

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed, or the mold may return
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, on clothes and pets, or air conditioning and heating systems
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture
  • Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth
  • Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent to discourage mold growth

Washing Machine Washout in Norfolk?

Washing Machine Maintenance Tips for Norfolk.

Did you know that supply line failure is one of the top causes of water damage involving a washing machine? SERVPRO of Norfolk has seen the damage a burst supply line can do. Here are some washing machine supply line maintenance tips:

Conduct monthly inspections of the hot and cold washing machine supply lines.

  • Look for signs the supply hose may be ready to fail—blisters in the hose, worn tubing, stress cracks, or a loose connection
  • Replace the supply hose with a reinforced steel braided hose if it shows any sign of wear
  • Tighten the connection if it feels loose. The most common site of failure is near the connection where the hose bends.
  • Replace supply hoses every five years, even if there is no obvious deterioration or wear
  • Some signs of deterioration may occur from the inside out and may not be visible until it is too late
  • When replacing washing machine supply hoses, always choose a reinforced steel braided hose over the traditional un-reinforced rubber hose. These hoses will last longer and are far less likely to result in a catastrophic water loss.

Advanced Technologies and Specialized Training for Norfolk.

At SERVPRO of Norfolk, we use advanced technology, and our technicians undergo initial and continuous training to keep up-to-speed on technological advancements and industry best practices. This saves our customers time and money and allows our technicians to restore residential and commercial properties in Norfolk to preloss condition faster and more cost-effectively.

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is the non-profit certifying body for the restoration industry. The IICRC sets the cleaning and restoration standards we follow. These standards incorporate the field of psychometry, allowing our technicians to become proficient in manipulating temperature and relative humidity through moisture detection and measurement equipment. This is important because excess moisture can cause further damage to a structure and encourage mold and other microbial damage.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment

  • An infrared camera may be used to identify water location for thorough water removal
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation

Sewage Spills Are Dangerous

SERVPRO of Norfolk technicians are on-call 24-hours a day in Norfolk and have required safety gear and equipment to handle any form of a sewage spill.

Sewer system water, or “Category 3 black water” carries dangerous viruses and bacteria, so it is imperative for the health and safety of your employees and customers to mitigate the damage as quickly as possible.

This water is highly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Blackwater can come from flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with fecal matter, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth. Blackwater may also contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes.

Sewage backups happen for many reasons. Some examples are:

  • Blockages due to tree roots
  • Broken or collapsed sewer lines
  • Septic tank obstructions
  • City sanitary mainline obstructions

Thunderstorm Safety Tips for Stanton?

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

Huge thunderstorm clouds are shown. We mitigate storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Stanton County.

Weather can be unpredictable in Northeastern Nebraska, and thunderstorms are common, bringing hail, winds gusting over 57 miles per hour, or a tornado to Stanton. When a thunderstorm blows in and damages your home, SERVPRO® of Norfolk has a team of technicians on call and ready to respond to assist you.

Here are some tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for staying safe during a thunderstorm:

  • When thunder roars, go indoors. A sturdy building is the safest place to be during a thunderstorm.
  • Pay attention to weather reports and warnings of thunderstorms. Be ready to change plans, if necessary, to be near shelter.
  • When you receive a thunderstorm warning or hear thunder, go inside immediately
  • If indoors, avoid running water or using landline phones. Electricity can travel through plumbing and phone lines.
  • Protect your property. Unplug appliances and other electric devices.
  • If boating or swimming, get to land and find a sturdy, grounded shelter or vehicle immediately
  • If necessary, take shelter in a car with a metal top and sides. Do not touch anything metal.
  • Avoid flooded roadways. Turn Around Don’t Drown®. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe health effects if ingested. Any contact should be avoided.
